Foods To Avoid On A Low-Carb DietThe Atkins diet was developed under the basic principle that the human body, when burning nutrients to create energy, will burn carbohydrates first before it begins to burn fats. Thus, an individual who consumes little to no carbohydrates will actually encourage his or her body to burn the fats when it needs to obtain a source of energy.

The Atkins diet is centered on the biological process known as ketosis. By severely limiting the consumption of carbohydrates, the Atkins diet actually forces the body to metabolize fat in order to produce the energy it needs. Since the body prefers to metabolize carbohydrates such as sugars and starches in order to obtain energy, a diet low in carbohydrates will result in the body metabolizing the next best source of energy, which in this case means the body will begin to burn fats.

Since the premise of the Atkins diet is to encourage the body to obtain its energy by burning fats instead of carbohydrates, it is important for anyone who is participating in the diet to reduce the number of carbohydrates that they consume. Foods rich in carbs only work to give the body the type of energy source it truly wants. As long as carbs are being consumed, the body will not resort to burning fats.

As a result of this concept, the Atkins diet encourages participants to consume few to no carbohydrates, leaving the door open for consumption of just about everything else. The important aspect of the Atkins diet is that participants can eat what they want, as long as it is low in carbohydrates.

The Atkins diet restricts the consumption of most carbohydrates, although small amounts of carbohydrates from vegetables are allowed. In general, the Atkins diet does not allow for the consumption of bread, cereals and pastas. In addition to those restricted foods, the Atkins diet also does not allow participants to consume vegetables that are high in starch. Also included in the general list of foods that Atkins does not allow are certain dairy products, as well as most fruits, and any other types of food that might contain any form of refined sugars.

In terms of specific foods that will work to sabotage the efforts of an Atkins dieter, vegetables that are high in carbohydrates and starches are usually the ones that individuals might want to avoid. Included on the list of the dreaded high-starch foods are vegetables like plantains, peas, corn, beets, carrots, and every different type of potato.

Also making the list of foods to avoid when on the Atkins diet are breads, cereals and grains, as well as sugars and all types of candy (unless the candy is sugar free). If you’re feeling thirsty, Atkins recommends avoiding non-diet sodas, as the carbohydrate content in one can might actually be more than the daily recommended intake of carbohydrates. Additionally, the Atkins diet recommends that participants of the diet generally avoid any foods that are made out of flour, mainly for the starch content.
